Encouraging Schools to Promote Apprenticeships

Encouraging Schools to Promote Apprenticeships

Promoting apprenticeships in schools is crucial to tackling the negative perceptions among parents and teachers. Apprenticeships offer credible alternatives to traditional learning routes such as university. Too many parents and teachers are skeptical about apprenticeships but it’s time to change this misconception and realise the excellent potential they bring to the table.

Introducing the Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance

Many young people will be starting to plan their futures right about now. Schools are now required to implement the Gatsby Benchmarks into their career guidance plan by the end of 2020. By law schools must have a ‘Career Leader’ in place to oversee careers and guidance.

Gatsby Benchmarks are made up of the following 8 practices:

  1. A stable careers programme

  2. Learning from career and labour market information

  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil

  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

  5. Encounters with employers and employees

  6. Experiences of workplaces

  7. Encounters with further and higher education

  8. Personal guidance
