KPMG launches digital degree apprenticeship

A recruitment drive from the Big Four firm has led to a 40% increase in apprenticeship hires in 2017, KPMG announced on Monday

The firm has hired 181 apprentices this year, up from 129 in 2016, bringing the total number of young people recruited into the firm’s apprenticeship schemes to 387.

The highest intake for the firm was in London, with 48 new hires. Birmingham saw the second highest number of new apprentices at 18, and there were 14 hires in both Bristol and Leeds. Two thirds of the hires have been made in regional offices.

“A central component of expanding our schemes involves making different locations – such as Southampton, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Cambridge – available to our apprentices, ensuring we are able to access previously untapped talent pools around the country,” said Kathryn Roberts, apprenticeships programme lead at KPMG UK.

The firm said that 150 of the new apprentices will join the six-year KPMG 360o apprenticeship programme, where they will be working across all areas of the firm, including audit, tax and advisory, before choosing to specialise in a particular area.

Successful apprentices will progress to sit their professional qualification and will be qualified to the same level as their graduate colleagues.

The remaining new recruits will join the KPMG 360o business services programme, which accredits apprentices to level three in business administration.

Karl Edge, regional chairman in the Midlands, said, "The city is booming and offers fantastic opportunities for apprentices and graduates to work on some of our biggest client projects.

“The benefits of having young people from different backgrounds in the workplace are second to none.

“From a fresh pair of eyes on a problem, to a different perspective on a project, the learning experience is absolutely two-way,” he added.

Last week, mid-tier firm BDO also bolstered its ranks, with 201 new trainees joining the firm followed by another 83 in November.

This most recent intake was selected from a record breaking 9,000 applications. Of the total intake, 74 were school leavers, with the rest being recent graduates.
