This guidance applies from September 2019. For current inspections, please consult the current further education and skills handbook.

This is a guide for inspectors on how to carry out inspections of further education and skills providers under the education inspection framework (EIF).

We also publish this for providers so that they are aware of Ofsted’s inspection processes and procedures.

Types of providers subject to inspection covered by this handbook 

The providers we inspect under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 and using this handbook are:

 further education colleges sixth-form colleges

 independent specialist colleges

 dance and drama colleges

 independent learning providers

 local authority providers

 designated institutions

 employer providers

 higher education institutions that provide further education and/or apprenticeship training up to level 5

 16 to 19 academies/free schools.
