Tuesday Thoughts from Angela Middleton about being a woman in business, what adversity she’s faced & how to ‘get ahead

I’m frequently asked to speak about being a woman in business, what adversity I’ve faced and how to ‘get ahead’ as a woman. My answers always tend to be around focus and authenticity. For example:
.

Focus on what you want rather than what you don’t. I’ve always thought of myself as just a person with goals like anyone else - male or female - and it’s that focus that has helped me achieve what I’ve wanted in business.
.
Having said that, embrace your feminine qualities - we don’t need to act like a man to succeed! For example we tend to be more empathetic than men, we can feel when things aren’t right and that’s needed more than anything when building teams - business is about people, people are the greatest asset in a business - and so this is a big plus point for us and one of our ‘superpowers’!.
.
Enjoy being a woman! We are so lucky that we can wear heels, long hair, lovely nail colours, dresses/trousers/skirts/suits, makeup and generally have fun with our appearance - it makes us stand out in a sea of grey suits! And yet we can also join the guys in the gym, lift heavy weights and be physically and mentally strong too - all in lovely outfits!
.
There’s many more points I make in this type of speech and whilst I’m certainly not denigrating the gender pay gap or any form of inequality either in or outside of the workplace (we know that’s real and there’s a lot of work left to do to close it - and more needs to be done) I do think we should recognise as women that we have advantages that men don’t and that they have challenges we don’t. We’re all just people with a mission at the end of the day so in my view in business and in life it’s best to just focus on the impact we can have and not on the challenges. Where focus goes, energy flows
