What is the RPS involvement in degree apprenticeships to date?

We have not contributed to the pharmacy degree apprenticeship trailblazer up to now.

We were notified by the trailblazer group that they were exploring this recently.

Government rules state that applications to develop degree apprenticeships must be employer led via their 'trailblazer' groups. We will work with our members on whether this form of entry is suitable as a route to registration as a pharmacist.

At this point we want to take views from the profession. Please contact education@rpharms.com

What is happening in degree apprenticeships for pharmacy?

A group of pharmacy employers have completed the first stage of a submission to the Institute for Apprenticeships.

The RPS has not been involved with this submission. The RPS will be feeding in our views at the appropriate time to make sure the profession's voice is heard.

How different is a degree apprenticeship to other forms of entry to a pharmacy degree course?

Like other models of academic and workplace learning for pharmacists (e.g. 5-year integrated degree, sandwich courses) degree apprenticeships will need to meet the General Pharmaceutical Council's learning outcomes and standards in order to be fully accredited. There are no different tiers of education and training for pharmacists.

Are other professions looking at degree apprenticeships?

The degree apprenticeship approach is also being taken by other healthcare professions and has been successful in areas such as engineering in improving the number of people able to access the degree.
